At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
