Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
