The Compassion of Strangers: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Because my travel mate was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
